ChatGPT Image Generation: What Metadata Gets Embedded
•6 min
ChatGPT Images Are Cryptographically Signed
OpenAI bakes C2PA Content Credentials into every image generated by ChatGPT (including DALL-E 3 and gpt-image-1). These are cryptographically signed manifests that identify the image as AI-generated, even after edits or re-saves.
What Is Actually Inside
- Provenance chain: Tool name, model version, generation timestamp
- IPTC DigitalSourceType: Always set to
trainedAlgorithmicMedia - XMP: Software tag "OpenAI"
- C2PA signature: A cryptographic seal verifiable by Adobe, Meta, Microsoft, and Google
Why Re-Saving Does Not Work
Opening the image in Photoshop and exporting it usually preserves C2PA. Most editors now respect Content Credentials by design.
How to Strip ChatGPT Metadata Properly
InstaLabelRemover removes C2PA manifests, IPTC tags, and XMP entries in one pass, then injects authentic iPhone EXIF data. The output is a clean JPEG with no traceable AI origin.
