How to Spot AI-Generated Photos: 5 Warning Signs
Why AI Detection Matters
As AI image generators become more sophisticated, distinguishing real photos from AI-generated ones is increasingly difficult. Knowing the signs helps you navigate the synthetic media landscape.
1. Perfect But Implausible Details
AI generators often struggle with fine details. Look for hands with too many or too few fingers, misaligned teeth, mismatched eye reflections, and garbled background text.
2. Overly Perfect Symmetry
Real life is rarely perfectly symmetrical. AI tends to create unnaturally balanced faces, buildings, and landscapes.
3. Strange Texture Patterns
AI images sometimes contain repeating textures or weird blending at edges, especially around hair, fabric, and organic materials.
4. Metadata Is the Smoking Gun
The most reliable way to detect an AI-generated image is to check its metadata. Real smartphone photos contain EXIF data from a real camera model, GPS coordinates, and camera settings. AI-generated images often have IPTC DigitalSourceType = trainedAlgorithmicMedia, C2PA Content Credentials, missing EXIF data, or tool names in XMP tags.
5. Reverse Image Search Fails
Real photos usually appear in reverse image searches. AI-generated images will not match any known source because they were created from scratch by a model.
