How to Check Photo Metadata Before and After Cleaning
Quick answer: check a photo in two passes: first record its EXIF, IPTC/XMP and Content Credentials before cleaning; then inspect the processed copy and compare the same fields. The goal is not to prove that a photo is “real” or to predict a social network label. It is to know exactly what metadata is present, what was removed or rewritten, and what remains.
Why a before-and-after metadata audit matters
“Metadata” is not one single block. A file can contain several families of information at the same time. EXIF commonly stores capture-related fields, IPTC is widely used for descriptive, administrative and rights information, and XMP can carry many kinds of structured metadata. The IPTC Photo Metadata Standard defines fields used across photography, publishing and asset-management workflows.
C2PA Content Credentials are different again: they are designed to record provenance in cryptographically bound manifests. C2PA explicitly says provenance data is not a value judgment about whether content is “good”, “bad” or factually true; it records assertions that can be verified against the asset. Step 1: keep the original file untouched
Start with the original export and duplicate it. Never run your only copy through a cleaner. The untouched file is your baseline for comparison and preserves any rights, creator or provenance information you may need later.
Record the basics
- File type and dimensions
- EXIF camera, lens, date/time and GPS fields if present
- IPTC/XMP creator, copyright, description and source fields if present
- Any Digital Source Type value
- Whether C2PA Content Credentials are detected

Step 2: inspect Content Credentials separately
Do not assume that an ordinary EXIF viewer fully describes C2PA data. Content Credentials use a signed provenance structure, so use a tool built to inspect them. Adobe documents its Content Authenticity Inspect workflow for viewing and verifying available credentials.
A useful audit note is simple: credential found / not found, plus the assertions actually shown by the verifier. Avoid interpreting absence of a credential as proof that an image is camera-original. C2PA itself does not make that claim.
Step 3: process a copy, not the baseline

What the audit can — and cannot — prove
A metadata audit can prove what the tools you used can read from a specific file at a specific moment. It can document a before/after change and catch mistakes before publishing.
It cannot prove that a scene really happened, identify every previous editing step, guarantee that no external provenance record exists, or guarantee the behavior of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or another platform. Likewise, an EXIF camera profile is not a certificate of photographic authenticity.

- Archive the original
- Inspect EXIF, IPTC/XMP and C2PA separately
- Record only fields relevant to your workflow
- Process a duplicate
- Repeat the same inspection tools after processing
- Check image dimensions and visible quality
- Keep your before/after notes with the asset if the file is business-critical
